This past weekend we went for an adventure down to see the 2nd largest city in Malawi - the city of Blantyre. It was a 4 hour trek which we broke up by stopping at a well known pottery place about an hour and half into the ride. At times it can be pretty scary driving on Malawian roads because busses overloaded with people will pass you literally going twice as fast as you - and it's only a 2 lane road. Since the election of the new president (and the massive devaluation of their currency) petrol has started to re-appear once again meaning it's now possible to get outside of Lilongwe.

Once we arrived we were amazed to see how "city-like" Blantyre looked as compared to Lilongwe. We stayed at the guest house of another mission (SIM - which stands for "Serving in Mission"). There were so many great people there - it was a real pleasure to meet other missionaries in another part of the country.

On Saturday we went for a "nature hike" at a little spot outside of town where you can see antelope and other "friendly" creatures roaming through the woods. We saw one toad. About 20 minutes into the hike we realized it really went steep down hill and then really steep coming back up hill. Bruce held Beth, the camera bag, and the diaper bag for most of it. Every once in a while Beth would say "peas? peas?" (which means "Please - let me stop for a drink") Mind you - she was carried the entire time but still required frequent water breaks.

It was a really nice weekend away. It was our first time away overnight as a family since last September which was a real treat for us. Grace's highlight is when we stopped for an ice cream. At 5 years old she can finish a whole cone without one drip. The mark of a true "Hanlon".
